A little intro about Latvia and language:

Latvian is a Baltic language and is most closely related to Lithuanian, although the two are not mutually intelligible. Latvian first appeared in Western print in the mid-16th century with the reproduction of the Lord's Prayer in Latvian in Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia Universalis, in Latin script.

Latvia regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Situated on the Baltic coast, Latvia is a low-lying country with large forests that supply timber for construction and paper industries. The environment is rich in wildlife. Latvia also produces consumer goods, textiles and machine tools. The country attracts tourists from all over Europe.

More briefly about language:

Latvian (latvieššu valoda) is the official state language of Latvia. It is also sometimes referred to as Lettish by old writings. There are about 1.4 million native Latvian speakers in Latvia and about 150 thousand abroad.
The Latvian language has a relatively large number of non-native speakers, atypical for a small language. About 1.9 million or 79% of Latvian population speak Latvian. Of those about 1,165,000 use it as primary language at home. The use of the Latvian language in various areas of social life in Latvia is increasing.

Actually, there are three different terms in Latvian which frequently are mixed up or used in wrongful manner.
* Enterprise (uzņēmums)is being used in Latvian daily life and is the most common word. However, the term itself means a company with all it`s assets, property, liabilities, obligations etc.
* Society (sabiedrība) is the most correct word and refers to limited liability company (SIA) and joint stock company (AS. However, this is used mostly among lawyers.
* Company (kompānija) is not commonly used but I guess it`s the most appropriate translation for "sabiedrība". So the word "company" is commonly used in communication with foreigners.

P.s. In your opinion, what is the difference between enterprise and company in the means of word meaning for a Latvian?
